Berthed this morning in Juneau, the capital city of Alaska. After breakfast we set off on foot to see the sights. First stop was the Mt Roberts Tramway which was a big gondola cart which took us up to the top of the mountain. Here we went for a one mile walk to a cross erected by Father John. It was a bit steep in parts but we had some great views and there were spots where the snow was still laying near the track. Tony was very interested in the plants.
On our return we saw a bald headed eagle which had been injured and was now on show for tourists. A bit sad but she would not have survived in the wild. A long wait to go down in the gondola but then we walked along the Main Street which was yet again nothing but hundreds of tourist shops where you could buy everything from cheap rubbish to diamonds.
We then saw the Red Dog Saloon and went inside to have lunch and a drink. What a hoot! Just like a bar from the Wild West with sawdust on the floor, girls in red and black costumes and stuff everywhere all over the walls. Lyn had a Duck Fart drink and the other choices included cheap shit, expensive shit and very expensive shit as well as beer. There was a guy playing a honky tonk piano and it was a great atmosphere.
Next we caught a local bus and went to The Glacier Gardens out in the suburbs. Another great experience riding the bus with the locals. Amazing nursery with millions of hanging plants and beautiful gardens including upside down trees with some roots looking like umbrellas and planted with flowers. A really spectacular sight.
Returned to the ship for dinner and then caught up with a few others from our group for coffee and then went to the show in the theatre. Great songs from our era, but rather loud. You have to admire the ship for getting the demographics right and pitching the shows to the right age group.
